Originally known as The Pans after the name Mary Pans, given in the 1700's. Local coal was mined to fire the pans used to produce salt from sea water. With a history going back centuries Machrihanish became a popular golfing resort in the late 1800's. Now in the limelight again with the recent opening of the Machrihanish Dunes course.
