    Point Reyes Lighthouse
The lighthouse at Point Reyes National Seashore on the Marin Coast of northern California, USA The Point Reyes headlands jut 10 miles out to sea and the area is the windiest place on the Pacific coast and second foggiest place on the north American continent. This posed a great threat to ships entering or leaving San Francisco Bay.The light house, built in 1870 was built 300 feet below the cliff in order to be located below the characteristic high fog. The lens and mechanism were constructed in France in 1867. They were shipped aboard a steamer around the tip of South America to San Francisco and then loaded onto another ship landing in Drake's Bay and loaded onto oxcarts to the location and then lowered onto the level area blasted away 300 feet below the clifftop. The Fresnal lens remains even though the lighthouse was retired in 1975 The lighthouse is now a maritime museum to teach people some of the maritime history. It is a strenuous place to visit, descending and climbing the equivalent of some 20 stories while being pounded by the strong winds. Canon 80D
