Inside Infinity
Looking beneath a surprisingly superficial layer of ego (worries, insecurities, self-image), I find a vast and peaceful empty space, where breathing immediately slows, and I'm refuelled without effort. It reflects the seemingly endless physical universe outside the body, when just looking up and beyond gives a feeling of freedom. * A quick pencil sketch which started as a way to practice portraits, turned into a lengthy work, mainly because the finished work is over a metre wide, and often small brushes were used. Mixed media began with a watercolour portrait, as I was excited to use a new tube of transparent black granulating pigment, which went beyond my expectations with it's cool effects. I scanned the painting, then began freehand digital painting, adding 3 scanned rubber stamps I’d carved using photo manipulation, as well as a photograph of a ribbon. I digitally drew the pearls, beads, gold and metal embellishments even though it seemed to go against the theme a bit, but I wanted practice drawing these. I like the raw, natural and textured look of watercolour and the carved patterns, combined with more detailed digital painting on the focal areas.
