Thurisaz Rune

Norse mythology contends that the runic alphabet is of divine origin. Thurisaz is the portal rune of transition from one space to another and is an invitation to step in into another realm for personal healing; that is if you learned your lesson from your experiences. The rune rules the psyche of anger, desire and lust and is symbolic of a piercing-like weapon or the power of the phallic symbol. This rune is associated to Thor and his hallmark hammer, Mjöllnir meaning lightning, who was the defender of the gods and guardian against the giants. As well it represents any piercing sharp thorn or impenetrable hedgerow that can be an obstacle or protection, inferring the maneuvering around boundaries or working within limitation, thus symbolic of thorny flora such as hawthorn, blackberry, bramble and rose bushes. An Anglo-Saxon Poem states, “The thorn is exceedingly sharp, an evil thing for any knight to touch, uncommonly severe on all who sit among them." A sudden lightning strike of luck can accompany this rune or is a warning that your luck is running out and struggle is ahead from narrow-minded thoughts. You may have to sharpen your ax, sword and knife for a pending conflict. Anvil thunderstorm clouds could be forming in the distance. Whatever the case it can mean something is unexpectedly changing. Nevertheless, you are without fear and prepared for anything that tumbles into your path. Resistance is futile and destiny will lay its hand on the table regardless of how much you kick and scream. You could plead you case to a seidr for the shaman to alter your course of destiny, but re-weaving part of destiny's web is dangerous. Once the fabric of time is woven some things are already set in stone and changing the course in midstream can cause problems. This is explained by the meaning of the word seidr for cord, string or snare, meaning strings are attached. You’re vulnerable to those who are hiding the truth from you and that risk and danger are ahead from betrayal and theft. Someone could be sneaking off with your money or possessions, but then again he or she could be stealing your emotions and draining your energy reserves. Don’t tempt fate and flaunt temptation for those to see. Fear can force you to act or paralyze you into failure. A good defense is your best offense. Truth is being sought, and you’re determined to find it, and the Hierophant is just the one to bring spiritual guidance of the truth. Thurisaz is the enemy of the unconscious inner-self that casts the veil of ignorance over the truth. If good is sought, the unconscious self will preside to acquire the wisdom needed to see the universal truth that the earthly has been hiding. The upwelling of courage to direct your freewill to breakdown the barriers fortressing the hidden truth is required. The Devil always entails some aspect of denial and temptation, leaving you with false truths and excuses while excluding the universal truth that is glaring at you like a beacon in the night.
