The Gray Rocks

History The name Wainstones [pronounced locally "Wainsteeans"] conveys the impression of a "Wain" or "Wagon" which at one time it may have resembled. However legend has it that a Danish Chieftain was slain there; if this is so then it is more likely that the name was derived from the Saxon verb Wanian meaning to lament or grieve. Indeed, one inscription that can still be seen is of great antiquity, others simply record the visits of modern barbarians where to start ?? Well I got a commission to take some images of the Wainstones on the outskirts of Great Broughton, I had never been there so didn’t quite know what to expect …. So I set off with my good mates Lance & Scott. I will state that I’m 5 foot sod all and 14 stone .. and climbing Cleveland’s answer to the bloody Matterhorn is not my idea of a Sunday afternoon stroll. about half way up I was begging for a bloody Sherpa to give me oxygen, that and I left my walking boots at home, so in me best trainers I managed to stagger up the bloody great hill (only to be told "yeah theres an easy way to get there if you walk around the bottom" !!) I must say when I got there it was an eerie place, it has an ancient feel to it, very much akin to the same feeling I got when I visited Stonehenge. The day was gray, overcast and on the verge of rain, most of these shots I have put up have been tone mapped to help get some detail and rescue what was a crap light situation Anyways there up here now, I will be going back but I’ll be keeping an eye on the weather (oh and taking the bloody easy way !!) On the way home we bumped into a couple of soft lads who didn’t quite make it to the stones …LOL ( Mike and Colin)
