Artist's Description

Church of St. Publius in Floriana, Malta.
St Publius Church (Triq San Publiju) was designed by Giuseppe Bonnici (1707-1779) and started in 1733; it was the last important church built by the Knights. It is named after the Roman governor in 60AD, at the time of St Paul’s shipwreck; he later converted to Christianity and became Malta’s first bishop.
Due to lack of funds it was only completed and consecrated in 1792 and the portico and the two tall bell towers were added in 1882 and designed by Dr Nicola Zammit (1815-1899). The church was rebuilt following heavy World War II damage. The 1815 St Publius statue is paraded on feast days.
