Rehabilitated

Crime is not allowed here, but inevitable. You cannot just snap your fingers and make it disappear no matter what politicians are saying. Those of us who were weakened by its appeal will forever pay the price. Maybe some should, but what about those unknown.

I stole a vehicle when I was nineteen. I am pushing through my forties now and cannot believe it was something I could have I ever done. There was a trial. I confessed on the eve of new policies. It will never be clear if I found salvation in these new laws, or if I had already found it in my own confession of guilt.

Prison was not pleasant. I met people who had done horrible things I couldn’t imagine. Not all of them were prisoners. Immediately, I was given new attire, two pairs of beige slacks, three beige T-shirts, two beige dress shirts and a beige jacket for visits to the yard.

The psychological exams started after a few weeks. I was taken to a room and strapped to a table. An I.V. administered drugs into my arms while a man spoke to me in soothing tones. The drugs allowed them to control my thoughts and chemically alter the make up of my brain. I fear that many basic instincts and functions were erased from my physical being.

I left with a new life. I was rehabilitated far beyond what was necessary. All of us, upon departure, were given a wardrobe of beige clothing. We are allowed to wear nothing else. We are told we are being monitored. This is to allow the rest of society the opportunity to know that we are a potential threat, although there is no way we could be to anyone anymore. The sentence is for life.

We in beige now wander the streets in our daily lives wearing our crimes on our backs for all to see. We look around at all the colors knowing that the criminals are covered in them, the ones who have not been caught. The ones they see as safe.
