Artist's Description

My grandfather Benjamin Melling was killed at the Battle of Pickem Ridge, in the Ypres salient. The family are pretty sure that this photograph is of his Royal Field Artillery battery, on the day before the attack. Rainfall that day was 22mm.

Because the original photograph is a thumbnail I have increased it’s size, whilst adding a slight tint, with DAP.

wikipedia
The Battle of Pilckem Ridge, 31 July – 2 August 1917, was the opening attack of the main part of the Third Battle of Ypres in the First World War. The battle took place in the Ypres Salient area of the Western Front.

After several weeks of changeable weather, heavy rainfall began in the afternoon of 31 July and had a serious effect on operations in August, causing more problems for the British who were advancing into the area devastated by artillery fire and partly flooded.
