A photo like this always makes me feel “the guy behind the button”. I didn’t create this, I only registered it. Yet I love this image.
It’s another one from Aomori in the north of Honshu, the central island of Japan. What you see is a nebuta-no-sato. Giant floats that are carried through the city in the beginning of August. They are actually giant lanterns made out of rice paper.
They have a historic origin, these floats. In the past they were carried through the city in times of war. Like this one, they mostly depict mythological demons in battle. Dragons, not in this picture, are another important ingredient.
