Artist's Description

The Bluenose II moored dockside on the waterfront in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, a UNESCO World Heritage Town.
The original Bluenose was built at Smith and Rhuland boatyard in Lunenburg and launched on 26 March, 1921. She was a working Grand Banks fishing schooner and won the International Fishermans’ trophy and was undefeated for 17 years. When fishing schooners became obsolete after WWII, she was sold and acted as a freighter in the West Indies until she ran onto a reef on January 28, 1946.
Bluenose II was built by Oland’s Brewery at the Smith and Rhuland boatyard and launched on July 24, 1963. She was purchased by the Government of Nova Scotia and refurbished and, later, put under the care of the Bluenose II Preservation Society. She now acts as a tourist attraction and ambassador for Nova Scotia and is the “host ship” for the Nova Scotia Tall Ships gatherings
The original Bluenose appears on the Canadian ten cent piece ( known as the “dime”) and on the Nova Scotia vehicle licence plates.
