Artist's Description

While Edward, Duke of Kent, future father of Queen Victoria, was serving as Commander-in-Chief of the army and navy forces in British North America (later Canada) he built a love nest for his mistress, Julie St. Laurent, in what is now Hemlock Ravine,a municipal park, on the shores of Bedford Basin behind Halifax, the capitol of Nova Scotia. They lived there for 10 years until 1802, when he returned to England. The “love nest” included their home, wandering paths which were said to spell her name,a round music room on the shore, and a large pond.
Although local legend has it that he built the heart-shaped pond for Julie, in fact it was a large oval. In 1869, two years after Canada’s Confederation, Edward’s grandson, Prince Arthur, son of Queen Victoria, came to Canada and arranged for the property to be restored and had the pond reshaped into a heart.
The legend of Edward and Julie is a classic love story in Nova Scotia’s history.

Taken with Canan Eos Rebel XSi and 18-55mm kit lens.
