Artist's Description

This is actually a tame photo given the one I thought I might be taking. A man, a woman, and two children – the one in the photo is the one who was standing up on the fence overlooking the sea. The smaller child was then being held by the man. As I walked up behind them, about to lean on the fence and take some photos of the sea, the man started to swing the child he was holding as if he were about to throw the child into the sea. As he swung the child – it really looked like he was about to throw the child, except I could not quite believe anyone would do that – not on the Portobello seafront, with people passing by, at least – he was saying, as if angrily, “Are you going to be good now? Are you?” repeatedly.

The woman put a hand on the man’s arm. The child cried. The woman said “I think that’s too scary” and took hold of the child, who clung tight to her – like a baby monkey to its mother – and I decided that I would go down the ramp behind them and to their right, and hang around taking pics of sand and sea. I don’t know if the woman had seen me and my camera as she stopped the man.

The child who was looking at the sea went on looking at the sea, and after a while, the other child stopped clinging and got down and went over to stand and look out over the sea as well.
