Artist's Description

A British grey squirrel, Sciurus carolinensis carolinensis, displaying typical markings: greyish fur on back, reddish on sides and muzzle, white chest and belly. Bolt upright, looking round for danger, head tilted to give the human with the camera a full-on dark glare.

Grey squirrels are opportunistic feeders: though they mostly eat seeds and fruit, they can adapt to take advantage of the sudden availability of different foods. Autumn is a season of dispersal for squirrels: this one seems to have staked out Edinburgh Farmers Market as its opportunistic feeding ground.
