Artist's Description

“There is a crack in everything.
That’s how the light gets in.”

The other day I visited Revolutions Bar in Chambers Street, Edinburgh, with a friend, who wanted to use the loo. Technically this is legal in any public house or cafe in Scotland, no matter what signs they have up saying “Our facilities are only for the use of customers”, but in many places you have to work rather harder to evade the waitrons: in Revolutions, I just sat down at a table, occupied my time photographing the sunlight on the floor and table, and waited for my friend to come back from the loo. We both knew we’d have to wait for a lot longer than a quick visit to the loo before anyone who worked there would ask us if we wanted anything off the menu.

When you actually want coffee and cake, this is a good reason for going to Caffe Lucano, round the corner on George IV Bridge, but if you just want to use the loo, Revolutions staff indifference is a great benefit to all when you can’t face finding the loo in the depths of the Museum of Scotland.
