Artist's Description

Taken from a side-street off the Market Square of Mechelen / Malines: Saint Rumbold’s Cathedral is one of the most magnificent churches in Belgium. On a misty November morning, the 97.28 meter tower is lost in the fog.

Like all great churches the history of its contruction extends over the centuries: the eastern transept was built about 1217, the western transept in 1230. Work started on the nave around 1250. The tower was begun in 1452, and was meant originally to be 167 m tall, but construction stopped during the religious wars of the 15th century.
