Artist's Description

The purple protesters at the Take Back Parliament demo in Edinburgh on 15th May 2010, crossing The Mound to assemble on Mound Place in front of the General Assembly Hall of the Church of Scotland.

The purple protest assembled on the High Street near Parliament House, built behind St Giles’ Cathedral and first used for a meeting of Scottish Parliament in 1639: last used in 1707, when the Parliament ratified the Act of Union.

At the time of the Act of Union the Scottish Parliament consisted of 314 members: 247 were aristocrats. The Act of Union allowed Scotland to send 16 peers to the House of Lords and 45 burgh and shire commissioners to the House of Commons. In 2005, the Boundary Commission review defined 19 burgh and 40 county constituencies for Scotland: 59 seats in the Commons, or 14 more than were allowed 298 years earlier.

In the first five years after the Scottish Parliament was reconvened in 1999, it met for the most part in the General Assembly Hall of the Church of Scotland, whenever the Kirk was not using it.

Scottish Parliamentary elections use Proportional Representation, the Additional Member System (AMS). Each voter can vote for their constituency MP (there are 79 constituencies for the Scottish Parliament) but also casts a vote for the party of their choice in the region: there are 8 regions, each of which returns seven MSPs, and the regional vote is calculated using the modified d’Hondt formula so that a party which gains enough region-wide support may return one, two, or more candidates to Parliament for that region.

The Purple Protest is a UK-wide movement calling for proportional representation in all UK elections, not just for elections in the devolved parliament of Scotland and assemblies of Wales and Northern Ireland.
