At the Demo for Democracy (“Take Back Parliament”:“www.takebackparliament.com”) in George Square, Glasgow, on Saturday 8th May 2010, this was probably the youngest protester.

Someone had brought along a length of purple cloth which was cut into strips for people who hadn’t brought or got anything purple to wear, and the kid had wrapped his strip round his head, and got his own helium balloon, and was happily wandering around the protest enjoying it all.

He reminded me of my own childhood – both of my parents are peace activists, and so all their children would spend time at anti-nuclear demos and so on: you may not understand altogether what is happening, but it’s a great feeling knowing you’re taking part in something your parents consider very important, which can somehow be accomplished by gathering in a friendly group in public and talking a lot about it. Some of the big peace demos I took part in as a child are now part of history, and I was there: so for this small boy, he’ll know when he’s an adult he was part of the movement to Take Back Parliament with proportional representation. History is what we make it.
