Artist's Description

The City Chambers, on the east side of George Square, Glasgow, were built between 1882-1888 by William Young, a noted architect, born in Paisley. The first council meeting was held in the City Chambers in October 1889.

George Square functions as Glasgow’s centre of democracy in another way: it has space for swiftly-organised formal or informal protests and demos. On Saturday 8th May 2010, two days after the Hung Parliament Election, we gathered together to protest the broken First Past the Post system and to demand Proportional Representation.

Someone had brought along a helium-balloon kit, and protesters wrote messages on the balloons before releasing them into the sky: the most common message was Wasted Vote.
