Artist's Description

A shattered reflection of the Renfield St. Stephen Church, 260 Bath Street, Glasgow, G2 4JP in the windows of Berkeley House (285 Bath Street, opposite).

The New Independent Church was designed by John Thomas Emmett (1828-98) in the decorated gothic style for which he became famous, and built of polished Kenmure sandstone between 1849-52. Later it became St. Mathew Blythswood, and is now Renfield St. Stephen. The spire you see is a 2001 restoration: the original spire collapsed onto the church during the Boxing Day storm of 1998.
