Artist's Description

Robert Owen (1771-1858) wrote “There shall be no human slavery, servitude, or inequality of condition, except the natural inequality of age and experience, which will for ever preserve order and harmony in society.” Robert Owen was the son of an ironmonger from Wales, a successful businessman who believed passionately in education, and whose ideas about conditions of employment were far ahead of his time. In New Lanark, from 1810 to 1827, he ran textile mills according to his principles of employment.
