Artist's Description

Robert Owen (1771-1858) wrote “Exchange their poverty for wealth, their ignorance for knowledge, their anger for kindness, their division for union.” Robert Owen was the son of an ironmonger from Wales, a successful businessman who believed passionately in education, and whose ideas about conditions of employment were far ahead of his time. In New Lanark, from 1810 to 1827, he ran textile mills according to his principles of employment.
