Description of and creating my artwork

I paint both sports and non sports subjects. I go in phases. Several sports paintings then I switch to non sports like scenery or ghosts of old lighthouse keepers or florals, etc then back to sports, etc.

Right now I am painting sports pictures.

First, I research the sports figure I am thinking about painting. His or her sports history, attitude, typical smile, popularity with the fans, etc

Then I obtain reference pictures of the face, action (i.e. the guy swinging a bat) and background (i.e. a stadium where he plays). I pick out the best pictures for the painting.

Then I compose the painting by moving the reference photos around.

Then I draw and paint the background. (Note: my entire painting is acrylic on canvas.)

Then I draw the face and action shot over top of the background. Then I paint the face and action shot in very thin washes so the background shows thru. In some places I will repaint the background a bit and then put more thin washes overtop to blend it into the rest of the face. (This is to make the face transparent.)

Finally I erase my pencil lines if any are left and I am done.
