Artist's Description

St Chad’s Church in Shrewsbury UK was built in 1792, and has a distinctive round shape and high tower.
Charles Darwin was baptised in St Chad’s church in 1809, and as a young boy attended the church.
The gravestone of Ebenezer Scrooge (played by George C. Scott) that was used in the 1984 film A Christmas Carol is in the cemetery.
It is said that the headstone is not a “prop” but an actual period headstone, on which the original inscription had deteriorated to the point where it was unreadable. The church allowed ‘Ebenezer Scrooge’ to be carved on it for the production, some of the original inscription can still be seen on the stone.

It was in the Music Hall in Shrewsbury that Dickens gave the first ever public reading of A Christmas Carol.
