Artist's Description

This is the Grave of James Eaton who during the Battle of Trafalgar (October 21st 1805) was Signal Midshipman on HMS Temeraire and was the first person to relay the famous message from Nelsons flagship, HMS Victory, ‘England expects that this day every man will do his duty’

HMS Temeraire was famously the subject of a painting by JMW Turner which is in the National Gallery in Trafalgar Square, London

James Eaton went on to have a long and distinguished career in the Navy and became a Captain.

His grave is in All Saints Church yard, West Bromwich which is about as far from the sea as you can get in England.
