Artist's Description

Hereford Cathdrals most famous tomb is that of Bishop Thomas Cantilupe (1218-82), ‘St Thomas of Hereford’, and stands in the north transept. Upon the bishop’s canonisation his tomb became a shrine and attracted pilgrimage in the Middle Ages. The 13th century structure of the shrine remains, though the carved knights on the lower section have been sadly defaced. The upper section of the shrine, missing since the Reformation, has recently been recreated, vivdly coloured with a painted scene of the Virgin & Child holding the Mappa Mundi.
