Artist's Description

The portrait of Sir Edward Elgar by Jemma Pearson was commissioned for Hereford Cathedral and unveiled in 2005.

The portrait depicts Sir Edward William Elgar, (2 June 1857 – 23 February 1934) an English composer, many of whose works have entered the British and international classical concert repertoire. Among his best-known compositions are orchestral works including the Enigma Variations, the Pomp and Circumstance Marches (Land of Hope and Glory)

He found inspiration from the countryside of Herefordshire and Worcestershire and the Malvern hills, which he loved to explore on his Sunbeam bicycle – nicknamed “Mr Phoebus”. These journeys were a great creative release for him, colouring his music and giving it that special Englishness for which he is so renowned and loved.
