Artist's Description

Ostlers Cottage

This two room (one room up and one down) cottage was built sometime around 1750 (when America still belonged to England) in Wells Next the Sea, Norfolk, and was last occupied as a dwelling in 1935. There was a toilet and wash house (with water pump) in the back yard which have long since been demolished.

An Ostler was a groom employed to look after the dray horses which pulled the wagons bringing the large casks of beer into town.
