Back in the day, before TV and computers and digital thingamajigs, people put on hats and coats and actually went out of their homes for entertainment. One of the most popular forms was the cinema (also known as movies or ‘the flicks’).
For just a few pennies people could escape the drudge of their weary lives into a world of glamour and sophistication. The buildings the films (or movies) were shown in tried to match the elegance and sparkle portrayed on the screen with their decoration and architecture and thus became known as Picture Palaces.
