I saw You: Market on 7th Ave.

You wore a yellow dress and looked like spring despite the conditions outside.

I wore a black sweater and fumbled the produce with numb fingers.

You moved elegantly and selected appropriate items.

I wasn’t following you intentionally but feared you’d think so. So, I hummed to the instrumental rendition of a Beatle’s song and I shuffled down the aisle.

We touched the same cantaloupe. You’d examined and discarded it in one motion. I ran my hand over the bumpy surface. I don’t really like cantaloupe.

Our eyes met briefly. I think you smiled at me, actually I’m sure of it. Long enough for the saxophone to spew another line of Paul’s melody, I smiled back at you.

You popped a grape in your mouth before cinching the bag closed.

When I turned back from retrieving my basket, you were gone.

I saw You: Market on 7th Ave.

Artist's Description

April Challenge #1. I got this idea after reading some “I saw You” personals in the newspaper, where people post ads of chance encounters hoping the person they saw will be reading and respond.
