I and You: the prescript

Summer never came soon enough and the wait for that summer, after moving to a new town, was harder to bear. However, on my first day of freedom I easily climbed fences and found my way to a large field, empty, except for random items marking a baseball diamond. I hopped on second base, a rectangular book and looked toward the outfield.

Some ways off there was a hill; there was you. From moving to new places I’d learned to observe. I found a twig and busied myself by swatting at dandelions, but I never lost track of you. You skipped with your head down and the breeze tickled your skirt. I danced cautiously near the bottom of the hill, somewhat mimicking your steps. You took notice of me. When you treaded down the hill, I instinctively dropped to a knee and sifted my fingers through the grass.

“What you doing?” You asked.

I told you I was looking, looking for something important. You didn’t move, I could feel the weight of your shadow. I saw your bare-feet with chipped pink nail paint. Almost hidden by the grass I noticed your big toe, the big toe on your right foot, had no toenail. I stood up after I’d found what I needed.

“Here.” I held out a four-leaf clover. “I can always find them.”

“Thanks.” Your blonde hair veiled your face.

I felt clumsy in my shoes and wished for my feet to be bare as well.

I asked, “What happened to your toe?”

“Nothing.” You spread your toes wide and pointed them upward. “Just never had a toenail.”

I smiled and a rush of wind rolled across the field and swept over us. Strands of hair twisted about your face and I could make out the corner of your lips. I reached out for your hand; you asked if I thought your toe was ugly.

“Not ugly,” I said.

We locked fingers and with your freehand you held out the clover. “Are you supposed to make a wish?”

With our shadows lengthening on the grass, I told you, you don’t have to wish, you just have to hold on to it.
