Artist's Description

A extreme close up of a Sempervivum, growing in our back-yard. The Dutch name Donderblad (Thunder-leaf) goes back to a description of Karel de Grote ~ Charlemagne: “et ille hortulanus habeat super domum suam barbam Jovis” (= "and every gardener should grow Thunder-leaf on his roof "), in the superstition that a house where this herb is growing on its roof, is protected against lightning….
