Artist's Description

Kasteel Duurstede (Duurstede Castle) (Wijk bij Duurstede, near Utrecht in Holland) is one of the oldest medieval castle ruins in the Netherlands. It is a defensive tower from 1270, built on the site of the marketplace Dorestad from Roman times to the junction of the Rhine with the Lek at the remains of the former Roman castellum Levefano.
The name ‘Wijk bij Duurstede’ means ‘neighbourhood near Duurstede’. Duurstede is the name of the nearby castle/ruin, where the bishop of Utrecht (David van Bourgondië – David of Burgundy) used to live.
The city is located on the Rhine. At Wijk bij Duurstede, the Kromme Rijn (Crooked Rhine) branches off, and the main branch is called Lek River downstream from Wijk bij Duurstede.
Wijk bij Duurstede received city rights in 1300.
