Slowly

He suckled away as she nursed him, cradling him gently in her soft warm arms. She cooed over him like a first born mother, rocking him gently as he nuzzled to her forcet, the tap that never seemed to run dry, the breasted milk of formulated milky white lashings of heaven.

He was the bright shining star of the hospitals nursery, nurses making fuss over his chocolate brown eyes; it was rare to see on new borns, the sparkling colour of blue wasn’t the colour of his eyes.

He was a soft musk of pink wrapped in a blanket, the white hospital coatings of fresh linen and the unnoticed way he would murmur as he fed from his mother, she was mesmerized by just how much she loved him, it wasn’t like anything she’d ever felt before.

She was shockingly surprised by how immediate that love struck her heart and all the warm fuzzies that trembled like butterflies on her insides.
The scarlet lips of him as he clenched to her nipple and broke away when finished his feed, gazing upon his mother with such trust.

His mother had never expected to feel like this or for her to have a connection just like that, his father not merely the same reaction. He’d come and go throughout the day but barely acknowledging that he even existed. He was living in agony to know he’d never get to truly know his son. Diagnosed with advanced stages of Cancer only left him to pull away from the one good thing going in his life, how does one live with the pain, the images that he’d lose.

The mother still cradling her precious bub in her arms, while her husband slowly disappears, the last image lost, he slowly walks away.
