SURPRISE…Chapter Eight

Arriving home late Chiara realized it was 4.20pm feral hour; everyone is too hungry to wait for dinner too lazy to get their own snacks. Books, bags, lunchboxes and newsletters needed to be tended to; the house was no doubt a mess. She hadn’t noticed Claire’s car parked in the street as she fumbled for the house key, placing her hand on the door handle she was surprised to find it open. Quietly she tip toed in hoping to surprise the children, the house was silent. Instinct is a funny thing, Chiara stood motionless, blessed with exceptional hearing she tipped her head almost canine in her expression. She could hear rustling as if someone was changing or drying themselves with a towel, she couldn’t quite decipher what it was. She felt as if she was trespassing and hesitated then she thought ‘Oh bugger this I’m in my own house for Christ’s sake’ Strutting down the hall her feet echoed on the floorboards, she heard scuffling…’Kids!’ Walking into the kitchen she found David leaning, back against the stove, arms folded and Claire head in hands at the kitchen table. Usually composed fury raged through her. ‘You’ve got to be fucking joking…Nah…No way…Breathe’ Every instinct told her it was true. David and Claire of course two needy compulsive fucks that played the victim aggressor simultaneously; of course it made sense, both with an insatiable appetite for want and gain, stepping on heads. Dizzied by the almost certain fact that her husband was indeed screwing on of Chi’s best friends. She resisted the urge to rant, better still it looked like the kettle was freshly boiled, and she suppressed a stream of very unpleasant vengeance’s in stewing in her head. ‘Thank god for logic’ Clenching her jaw she waited for one of the bastards to speak.

“Michael wants to leave Claire and the kids” David was doing his best to shock Chiara out of confirming what she strongly suspected. It worked although her gut instincts screamed blue murder. Michael and Claire had been married almost as long as she and David had; they had often holidayed together and spent all of their significant events together. It only seemed fair she help them through this. ‘What a day’ Chi’ thought – Auto Pilot once more.

After what seemed like an eternity spent listening to her blubber and wail Claire was finally on her way. Nothing like the train wreck of another relationship to make your own seem solid, pondering this Chiara set about the dinner, baths bed routine.
David had somewhere he had to be…

Alone mulling over the events of that shaped that day Chi’ began to smile. INT/Dillon Tanner; the face had a name. A new happiness kept reality at bay. It was late, time for bed.
