Artist's Description

The Halloween pennant dragonfly is a very common dragonfly to the Eastern United States. It was given the name “Halloween” due to it’s dark and sometimes orange coloring and “pennant” for the way the perch on tall grass and weeds and sway like pennants in the wind. They are a beautiful and usually very approachable species of dragonfly. I was quite close to this one when I was photographing it. The female (shown here) is less striking in color than the male (they are a vibrant red). I took this along the side of my yard in Rockaway, NJ USA. I used the Nikon D3100 and the Nikon 105mm macro lens.
