Artist's Description

These are Fiery skipper butterflies. They are part of the grass skipper group, which is the most abundant group in the skipper family. Grass skippers (subfamily Hesperiinae) are usually small orange and brown butterflies. Adults rest with wings closed or bask with hindwings open flat and forewings at an angle (the “jet plane” position), a posture unique to grass skippers. They are fast, agile, erratic fliers. I caught these little guys out of the corner of my eye. They were skipping from flower to flower and having a merry old time of it from what I could tell. They were completely unaware of me and posed for a few great shots. The male is the brighter, orange one on the bottom right. This was taken in my yard in Rockaway, NJ. I used a Nikon Coolpix L110 digital camera.
