Artist's Description

The pier at Colwyn Bay, on the north coast of Wales, was designed by Maynall & Littlewoods and constructed by William Brown & Sons. Opened in 1900, this glorious piece of seaside engineering has now fallen into disrepair. The structure of the pier is considered too dangerous for us to walk on or under, yet is easily seen at low tide on this broad, sandy bay.
I relish the dark angles of the ironwork, through which can be seen rocky groynes stretching over the beach, the distant promenade, seafront buildings, and glimpses of 21st century life. On this cold, grey day, the scene was nearly monochrome, so it made sense to keep the image that way, to emphasise the geometrical shapes of the pier’s supports.
