“The World Trade Center – Rescue, Recovery, Response” New York State Museum, Albany NY (www.nysm.nysed.gov)

This fire helmet was given to the State Museum by the crew of Engine 6. The number 343 at the front base of the helmet represents the number of FDNY who died that day.

Rescue:
Engine 6 being the closest to the Twin Towers and having a special pump that could reach 102 stories tapped into the standpipe of the North Tower.
By 10:28 A.M., both towers collapsed, killing 2,746 people and destroying the entire complex. More than 25,000 people were evacuated in the 102 minutes between the time the planes hit and the buildings collapsed.
Engine Co. 6 lost 5 of 7 firefighters assigned her.
