This is a General Motors/EMD E series diesel passenger locomotive on display at Canal Street Station Museum (Joseph J. Merli Manufacturing Company of New York), Duanesburg, NY.
The E series started in 1937 with the 1800hp model EA, manufacturing ended in 1964 with the 2400hp model E9.
This unit, an E8 entered service with the Pennsylvania RR in 1953,,, and was removed from service by the PennCentral in 1976.
The locomotive was rescued from a siding at Watervliet NY in the early ’90’s by Joe Merli.
The “E8” is now displayed with New York Central System livery colors…. perhaps someday to be an ice cream stand.
A little factoid: If you look on either side of the NYCS logo you will see “grab hooks” that were unique to the Pennsylvania RR E series locomotive’s.
