Designed by Ole Singstad and opened on November 15, 1940. The tunnel runs under the East River from midtown (E34th St.) Manhattan to Queens (Long Island Expressway).
The tunnel consists of twin tubes carrying four lanes of traffic. It is 6,414 feet (1955m) in length and the height clearance is 12 feet 1 inch.
Since 1981 the tunnel has been closed for a few hours in the spring for the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus Animal Walk… from the train yard in Long Island City to Madison Square Garden in Manhattan.
