Artist's Description

A statue of Saint Colmcille with dove in St Columbs Park, Derry.
Saint Colmcille (Irish for church dove of the church) aka St Columba, is the patron saint of Derry, and one of the three patron saints of Ireland, along with St. Patrick and St. Brigid.
St Colmcille was born in County Donegal in the 6th century, and in the course of his career he founded monastic settlements in (among other places) Derry and the important community at Iona in Scotland.
Derry is sometimes referred to in Irish as Doire (oak grove) Colmcille.
Saint Colmcille led and eventful, indeed controversial life, and is well worth further reading.
