Artist's Description

The Wright brothers are credited with being the first to attain a goal long-imagined and often attempted without success. On December 17, 1903 after three days of repairs from their first unsuccessful attempt, they made four flights in a powered, heavier than air machine. The first flight lasted 12 seconds and covered 120 feet, but it was the start of an ever-expanding effort to increase powered flight that actually put astronauts on the moon in less than 66 years following this first successful attempt.
Icarus, of course, was a Greek lad who, with his father, attempted to fly with wings made of feathers and coated with wax. He failed to heed his father’s advice, flew too close to the sun and fell into the sea.
The Wright Brothers’ National Memorial is located on Kill Devil Hill in North Carolina and withstands the rays of the sun quite well as this image demonstrates.
