Artist's Description

a view from beneath the stained glass dome, Court of Common Pleas, Crawford County Courthouse, Bucyrus, Ohio.
The courthouse was built in 1854. The exterior had the appearance of a Romanesque building with wide steps leading to a pediment that was supported by four wooden columns.
In 1893 the first addition was added that doubled the size of the original structure. A second addition was begun in 1908 that had stone placed over the original brick, stone pillars replaced the wooden columns and the main courtroom was remodeled to its present appearance.
The redesign called for a stained glass dome as the central feature for the new court room. Bryant Art Glass of Columbus, Ohio had the winning bid and was awarded the commission. The original cost was $1,140 for the glass and $2,160 for labor.
in 1979 a new skylight was installed above the dome to halt water from leaking through the original stained glass and prevent further deterioration of the dome. A preservation effort was undertaken and ACME Art Glass Company, Grove City, Ohio undertook the restoration of the dome at a cost of $21, 500.
