Artist's Description

The entrance to the main courtroom, Common Pleas Court, Crawford County Courthouse, Bucyrus, Ohio. This view shows a look into the chamber through a doorway that features acid-etched glass panels and beveled glass transom and side lights.

The courthouse was built in 1854 and some of the structural requirements were that “the walls be constructed of good brick and be at least 16 inches thick.” (from a history of the courthouse informational pamphlet)
The exterior had the appearance of a Romanesque building with wide steps leading to a pediment that was supported by four wooden columns.
In 1893 the first addition was added that doubled the size of the original structure. A second addition was begun in 1908 that had stone placed over the original brick, stone pillars replaced the wooden columns and the main courtroom was remodeled to its present appearance.
The redesign called for a stained glass dome as the central feature for the new court room. Bryant Art Glass of Columbus, Ohio had the winning bid and was awarded the commission. The original cost was $1,140 for the glass and $2,160 for labor. The total cost for the entire renovation in 1908 was $7,350.
