Getting ready for my day,
I viewed the television.
I surmised that tv in general,
And especially commercials
Promise good times,
Promise health, wealth, and happiness,
Promise friends and success,
And in the process of all of these promises
Tell many, many lies,
And falsely represent
The real world.

On a program
I saw three little boys,
Selling rats on a skewer,
To passing tourists,
Hoping to support their family
Hoping to provide something
That they would prefer to eat
Hoping to one day,
Escape the poverty
That they find themselves in.
Probably, one of the only real things I viewed.

On the news,
Men and ladies with shiny faces
And happy smiles
Report the misery that a large part
Of the world lives in,
Happy that it is not themselves
Who suffer, like the people
They are talking about.
I hope some of them care.

Bombs, wars, earthquakes
Killer floods, famines,
Murders, rapes, affairs, and abuse
Are just some of the things they speak of.
“Now, please tell me how you feel!!”
As they shove their microphones into the suffering
They encounter,
As if people that suffer
Do not deserve privacy!

“Vote for me, don’t vote for him!
If you do you are not perfect, don’t you see?”
“If only you could think like me!!!”
Lies to get elected, on every side.
Can’t we see it is power they’re after?
They want to take us all for “their” ride!

Republicans and Democrats,
Libertarians and Bureaucrats!
Spout their so-called wisdom
And flood the waves!
Assuring everyone with
Their rants and raves.

Everyone has an opinion
And they just have to be heard.
Exhibitionists grace the airwaves,
Begging us to come along
For the ride!
An advertisement for a new show,
“ways to die???”
please tell me,
Have we become so shock proof,
So hardened,
That things like this do not matter?

Desperate housewives,
Real wives,
Swapping wives!!!!
Spoiled, soiled little girls
on reality shows.
Little boys looking for
a one night stand,

Revealing family tragedies
Laughing at another’s pain,
Glorying in their loss,
Where nothing sacred remains.

I think the “neon god”
in the “Sounds of Silence”
certainly was a television!

Come along and be agonized, hypnotized,
Demoralized, scandalized, capsized,
Vandalized, compromised, commercialised
Collectivised, dehumanised,
Merchandised, and magnetised,
Misadvised and noncivilised.

Make it a point to be oppressed,
Distressed, regressed, obsessed,
Depressed, possessed, and stressed.

Don’t forget the potion
That looks like a lotion
Erase those lines,
Yes, yours and mine.

Have sex daily til your dead
With a little blue pill
It doesn’t even matter,
With medication, you’re never over the hill.

You might have a stroke
But it’s all okay,
The only thing that matters,
Is you’ll be having fun”today.”

How far we have come
In this enlightened age!
Where everything is wonderful
And all the world’s a stage!

We’ve debased ourselves with freedom
And sunk to the lowest pit,
Where, no morals are the normal,
And values do not matter,
Even a little bit.

Yet, people are people
And they’ll do what they will,
Exposing one another
To get a thrill!
I have to draw back
And refresh my soul,
Go back to the earth,
Because there, I feel whole.

There is no modesty
In this odyssey,
I think I’ll take a walk
And gaze up to the stars
And view what’s real,
And view what’s pure,
And calm my soul,
And feel the beauty,
That endures.

Hear the hoot of the owl,
Watch the horses munch grass,
View the deer across the road,
I feel peace, at last.
