Butterflies Are Beautiful, Even In Death

Clearing weeds from my horse’s outdoor corral
I bent to see fluttering treasures
Beneath thick and tangled weeds.

It always amazes me when I see
What is left after a butterfly leaves
This world.

Did you ever notice the wings
Of a dead butterfly?
They softly flutter in the wind
As if the butterfly is still alive
And floating on the breeze,
Sipping nectar from sweet smelling flowers.

Gently picking them up,
And walking to the house,
I put them in the special place I have
To stash these enchanting jewels.

I wonder sometimes,
If the ground sparkles
From butterflies that have
Again turned to dust,
Like it is God’s gift
To the earth.
