More of the Major Arcana makes an appearance. Original watercolor and inkline depiction of “The High Priestess” tarot card designed for an all-female Art Nouveau deck.
Symbolic of the virginal maiden and the subconscious mind, the High Priestess sits as the balancing power between the pillars of initiative and resistance. Her throne is decorated with carved pomegranates (female) and crowned by a palm (male), with the intuitive moon balanced at her feet. Only when intuition allows conscious thought and desires to penetrate the subconscious mind can creativity’s potential be fully realized. Portending the unrevealed future, silence, mystery, duality and hidden influences at work, the High Priestess is shown at dawn with the sea at her back and combines aspects of water (cups) and earth (pentacles) zodiac are influences. She is attended by a crane, her familiar, symbolizing arcane wisdom and balance.
