Affairs with Wizards Never End Well

Somehow, Ayryk knew this was going to happen. He drew forth his shortsword and leveled it at the wizard. All this for learning Elvish, he thought to himself. His foe grinned, and an orb of flame manifested over his hand.

“You get one chance to pay up, kid- or I cook you like a haunch of venison.”

“I don’t owe you a thing, old man. Don’t make me spill your blood.”

The wizard’s grin widened, and he hurled the fireball at Ayryk. He leapt into the air, narrowly avoiding the roasting due by the strike. Aiming the blade for a hacking slash, he struck- and hit the open air.

The wizard shoved one hand forcefully, and Ayryk slammed into the nearby shelves. He stood with a curse, then leapt aside as another fireball hurtled at him. Prepared to face the next one, the only thing the wizard hurled at him was a curse.

“Damn you, child, now look what you’ve done!”

Ayryk looked. The shattered barrel on the floor told him something; the coiling green mist rising from the wreckage raised a whole lot more questions.

“That’s the Spellplague, you fool! Fly! Fly!”

As the wizard ran to the door, Ayryk’s headache set in again. Unable to restrain himself, he screamed aloud in Elvish, “STOP!” Instantly, the wizard froze- and so did almost everything else. As the mist continued spreading, he heard a gravelly voice.

“Your choice, half-elf; either I kill you or I kill the old guy.”
