Artist's Description

Maldon is one of the oldest recorded towns in England. It sits on a hill, where two rivers meet, and it was an important port for many centuries. There’s still a fleet of old timber sailing barges here – although they don’t carry cargo any more.

This shot was taken just after sunrise on a winter morning. The barges are mostly “laid up” for winter – with their sails taken off and their topmasts lowered. When the topmast is up and all the sails are set, the mast is nearly 30m tall and there’s an acre of canvas in the sails.
