Artist's Description

This sea otter mum is swimming across Inian Pass, Southeastern Alaska with her newborn pup comfy, safe, and dry on her chest. The pup doesn’t seem to have a care in the world, and in fact sea otters are beginning to make a comeback in much of their range here in Alaska. This is very different than the days when Georg Wilhelm Steller first brought back 900 sea otter pelts when he returned in 1742 from the first European contact with the sea otter, on Vitus Bering’s expediton of discovery. These animals were so highly prized for their fur that the rush was on to exploit them throughout Alaska, and they were commercially considered extinct in only a few decades. In modern times protection and reintroduction have allowed the sea otter to rebound in many parts of its former range, and with new fabrics for warmth the need to slaughter sea otters for their fur has been significantly reduced!
